HOW DOES A FURNACE WORK?

A furnace heats your home by converting natural gas into thermal energy in the form of hot air. All natural gas furnaces consist of four main components to create heat: the burner, heat exchanger, blower, and controls. In general operation, the burner is where the gas is delivered and burned to create heat. Whenever your control or thermostat calls for heat the burners in your furnace ignite natural gas. The heat exchanger in your furnace transfers the heat produced by the burners to be blown by the blower. The blower is a large fan that moves the heated air through your ductwork to your air registers to heat your home. All natural gas furnaces are exhausted with venting so exhaust and combustion byproducts vent to the outdoors.

Stages of Heating

When purchasing a new furnace, the stage of heating is an important factor to consider. Here is some information to help you understand the difference.

WHAT IS AFUE?

The AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the most accurate measure of efficiency for gas furnaces, which accounts for start-up, cool-down, off-cycle loss and other factors that affect real operating performance. The higher the AFUE rating means the greater energy efficiency – meaning energy dollar savings!

Furnaces and AFUE Rating

The AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the most accurate measure of efficiency for gas furnaces, which accounts for start-up, cool-down, off-cycle loss and other factors that affect real operating performance. The higher the AFUE rating means the greater energy efficiency – meaning energy dollar savings!

If you have a standard efficiency furnace, than it is only performing on average with an AFUE of 50%. That means that for every dollar of energy that you spend on your furnace to heat your home: $0.50 is being wasted and not converted into heat. High efficiency furnaces with an AFUE on average of 95% waste only $0.05 for every energy dollar spent!

Standard Efficient Furnace
50% AFUE

$0.50 of every dollar wasted

Mid-Efficient Furnace
80% AFUE

$0.20 of every dollar wasted

High-Efficient Furnace
95% AFUE

$0.05 of every dollar wasted
